Well I’m exhausted. We had an eventful day today talking to a floorer about putting vinyl down to replace the moth-infested carpet that’s currently in our flat. What made it eventful I guess was walking to the flat and back to Sue’s instead of busing as we normally do. Seems like it’ll end up taking us about 25-35 minutes to walk each way, depending on whether or not we walk briskly. We did a couple errands as well, from picking up parking passes to doing some grocery shopping for tonight’s dinner (twice – since we forgot to pick up mushrooms the first time).
And yes, as Thomas implied in a post from a while back, under a week from our landing in the U.K. (May 12th), we made an offer on a flat (May 16th). That offer was accepted (on May 17th after increasing it some) and from this past Friday (June 17th), we’ve been the happy owners of a gorgeous, well-lit studio flat here in Bournemouth.
These are some of the pictures I took when we first were shown the place. I knew they were likely to come in handy. ;)
The entrance –
Which I’ll likely turn into a mudroom of sorts. Perfect spot for hanging our coats and keeping our boots and shoes.
This is how the flat looks full on. The middle door obviously leading toward the entrance, two closets on either side, and what used to be a bed on the left side of the room and a couch on the right (we asked to have those taken out so they’re no longer there).
How it looks on the left side – entrance to the bathroom there on the left.
How it looks like on the right – entrance to the kitchen on the right (and a few of Sue’s limbs in the shot as well!).
The bathroom, which needs a great deal of cleaning up. Lots of mold to scrub off. And one of the closets, which are enormous –
And finally the kitchen.
That microwave has got to go. Turned it to the side a couple of days ago only to reveal a gruesome sight underneath. I hope the stain left there can be removed (need to research how to do that), but if it can’t, at least it’s in a spot that’s somewhat easy to cover. Can’t be doing a complete overhaul renovation any time soon, but we are going to do the floors since, as I said, the carpet is moth infested in the main room (and there’s mold on the carpet in the bathroom – but I abhor carpet in the bathroom anyway). Since doing the entire apartment in one go with one kind of flooring is cheaper than having bits and pieces done, we’ll almost certainly end up redoing the floor for the whole flat in one shot. I’m not fond of anything that’s currently there (sloppy DIY vinyl and hideous moldy and moth infested carpet; no thanks!).
And, best for last, this is the glory shot of the windows and the view; taken by Thomas who is obsessed (rightly so) –
Didn’t even need to edit that picture. Thomas will say it’s his due to his amazing photography, but it’s definitely because of how wonderful the lighting is already. Our flat is pretty much a photographer’s dream.
This is the first time we’ll be doing serious aesthetic renovations to a home for ourselves. Last time we did any (the only time we’ve ever done any) it was just before we sold our house. So it’ll be nice to finally enjoy the fruit of “our” labour (a.k.a. hiring someone else to do the job!).
Anyway, that’s about it for the update! Will post new pictures once the floors are in.
